Self feed (Part II)

April 1, 2009

Assalamu’alaikum wr. wb.,

Ya Bint,

You are already turning 20 months. Yup in 4 months time, you are turning 24 months/2years old. Alhamdulillah!

Yesterday marked the first day that you fully self-feed without Ummi’s feeding you. That is over dinner. You had Salmon Fried Rice and some Coleslaw that Ummi cooked and prepared for the day. And you end the day with drinking milk. Alhamdulillah!

You are really doing great in this area of development. Alhamdulillah!

Self Feed

March 9, 2009

Assalamu’alaikum wr. wb.,

Ya Binti,

After about 2 months(now you are 19 months) of playing with spoons, bowls and water, you are able to self-feed yourself, for food that you want to eat. For example, noodles and beancurd. When we eat outside, you are so focused in what you do with those cutleries and food that Ummi and Abi are able to eat in ‘peace’.

Not only to food, even liquid! Yes, you are able to use the spoon to scoop soup and water to your mouth with minimum spills.

Alhamdulillah, a distinct development from Akhi. Ummi will be waiting for the day that you are able to eat yourself for all meals.

Tongue Out

July 7, 2008

Assalamu’alaikum wr. wb.,

Ya Binti,

It has been about 3-4 days in which you were refusing food that went to your mouth. You were refusing your normal porridge. You were refusing the baby bites. And almost anything that Ummi has been trying to feed you. Most of the time, you stuck out your tongue with the food given in your mouth.

“Oh no! Ya Allah, does this mean another phase of Meal Woes that I have to face? This time my daughter?”

Ummi did some reading whether you were having eating disorder, etc. Few reasons that convinced Ummi are:

* children from 1-4 years of age will tend to eat lesser than they are supposed to

* children who are turning 1 year grow and want some autonomy

* children who are turning 1 year begin to be playful

What have Ummi done so far to tackle the above problem that Ummi ever experienced with Akhi back then when he was about 1 year 1 month (when Ummi began expecting you)?

1. Cut food in chunks so it will be like finger foods

2. Allowed you to self-feed yourself, which of course turn out to be a BIG MESS

3. Tried to feed you while you were carrying out Task 2

What’s the outcome?

Initially, you ate some, about 3-5 fingerfoods. You also ate the one that Ummi fed you. Alhamdulillah.

HOWEVER, when Ummi tried to feed you more, you refused to open your mouth and stick out your tongue, pushing the food that was in your mouth out. In fact, you are able to fold your tongue to remove whatever left over from your mouth. How SMART you can be!

What’s the next step?

With Abi’s and Nyayi’s advise, Ummi breastfed you most of the time. In addition, Ummi is currently feeding you Nestum with Friso 3 just before you go to bed. Alhamdulillah, you ate although there were times when you did not want to finish the portion given, despite the forcing that Ummi tried on you to have your mouth open.

What makes you take in the Nestum? This was not successful when Ummi tried feeding you during the daytime. Well, the story goes like this…

“Yesterday we went for dinner, window-shopping and shopping at Courts, Ikea and Giant after ‘Asr. Sorry that Abi had to follow us instead of going for the haul at Masjid Khalid. Ummi just need to destress herself from the feeding woes of her 2 kids. Over dinner, you had some mashed potato and some breastmilk. The amount that you have consumed then stretched till we reached home around 10pm. Ummi knew you were tired, so Ummi tried the Nestum (alone) on you. Alhamdulillah, you ate the amount of the Ikea bowl. It was again a success today.”

Therefore, for the time being, Ummi will try give you any finger food during the day, in addition to plain water and breastmilk. And your day ends with Nestum or any food before all of us turn in. May Allah makes Ummi’s breastmilk enough for your consumption and makes you open your nafs to eat more. Ameen.

Out of the Chair!

May 25, 2008

Assalamu’alaikum wr. wb.,

Ya Binti,

Yesterday, we went to Sakura Buffet Restaurant for our lunch after viewing what’s there at the new building of Downtown East. Well, since you are able to sit on the high chair, Ummi had you in it. You enjoyed yourself being independent on that chair, holding your Baby Bites in your both hands and feeding yourself, at the same time Ummi feeding you the balance of the biscuit and mashed papaya. Boy! You did not really like the mashed papaya – you pushed it away with your tongue after a few spoons.

After you had your milk in the musollah, you were back in the high chair. Oh my! You attempted to get out of the chair. And true enough, after about 3-5 attempts, you were out of that chair all by yourself leaning forward. Alhamdulillah, Abi was nearby to save you from falling. Ummi was observing you while feeding Akhi at a nearby coined car. We really, really did not expect you to be able to be out of there. How did you do that?! Nobody taught you…. You sure used various skills that you have acquired to do that, wasn’t it?! The next time to have you on any high chair is to ensure that the high chair has a strap, at least.
